In reality, Microsoft announced that MIM has reached &#8220;end of mainstream support.&#8221; Extended support will be available until January 13, 2026. This has calmed things down somewhat.   <\/p>\n<p>These &#8220;End of Life&#8221; announcements were certainly welcome news for several other Identity &amp; Access Management (IAM) suite providers who immediately wanted to offer an alternative. And with some success. <\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re seeing one of our clients migrate to a different IAM solution. Naturally, it was highly recommended by renowned analysts. Migration costs were &gt; \u20ac1 million. The lead time is now over a year, with months of overrun. Annual licensing costs are rising from zero to several hundred thousand euros. Management costs are tripling; the solution has become more complex, and multiple technologies are being used, requiring more expertise.     <\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, we are migrating new customers from other IAM solutions to MIM. In one specific case, the migration took several months, and the Cost of Ownership was reduced by a factor of 20. A project we are pleased to refer to.  <\/p>\n<p>We even implement new MIM environments for clients who previously didn&#8217;t have an IAM solution. MIM offers a future perspective. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Contradictory? Confusing?  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note: Microsoft recognizes that MIM functionality is essential in a hybrid or cloud-based IT infrastructure. Microsoft plans to move MIM functionality to other components within the Azure platform and its products and cloud services. A suitable migration path will be part of these &#8220;moves.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>If an infrastructure including MIM is configured according to Microsoft best practices, the migration path will be smooth. MIM, as a standalone product, will certainly become obsolete in the coming years; its functionality will remain recognizable. <\/p>\n<p><strong> Telling features of MIM: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It has proven very stable since its acquisition from Zoomit in the late 1990s. It has been known in the market under many names, including Microsoft Identity Integration Services 2003 (MIIS), Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 (ILM), and Forefront Identity Manager 2010 (FIM). <\/li>\n<li>The MIM core is solid and more or less bug-free. We&#8217;ve encountered fewer than 10 bugs in the past 20 years, none of which had any real impact. <\/li>\n<li>MIM is not feature-rich in its core, but it can be easily expanded technically and functionally with many features (add-ons).<\/li>\n<li>Many MIM add-ons (including our own Trusted-ID) are available on the market and in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Privileged Identity Management (PIM), Privileged Access Management (PAM), Connectors, Workflows, IGA, Reporting, etc., are all possible. <\/li>\n<li>License costs for MIM itself are zero or included in, among others, &#8216;Azure Active Directory Premium (P1 and P2)&#8217;, see <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-identity-manager\/microsoft-identity-manager-licensing\">Microsoft Identity Manager licensing and downloads | Microsoft Docs<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The technology used to expand or manage MIM is familiar in a &#8220;Microsoft unless&#8221; environment.
